In Florida, an expired registration does not stop you from donating your car. With Palm Motor Legacy, what matters most is that you have a valid Florida title in your name, not whether your tags are current. You do not need to pay back-registration fees or re-register the vehicle before donating. We arrange free towing anywhere in Florida, handle the paperwork with our auction and processing partners, and you receive a donation receipt for your taxes.
Whether your car has been sitting in a Jacksonville driveway, a Miami condo garage, or on a side yard in Lakeland, we routinely accept vehicles with lapsed or expired tags. The car does not need to pass inspection or even start—we’ll send a licensed tow truck at no cost to you. After pickup, the vehicle becomes our responsibility, and proceeds support Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) serving people who are blind or visually impaired. Your key job: sign the Florida title over and notify the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles of the transfer, so future liability comes off your name. It’s a straightforward, proven process tailored for Florida donors with problem vehicles.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have a valid Florida title in your name
Grab your Florida title and confirm your name is listed as the owner and there are no undisclosed liens. The tags can be totally expired—that’s okay. If you’ve misplaced the title, you can request a duplicate from the Florida DHSMV before donating. The title, not current registration, is what lets Palm Motor Legacy legally accept your vehicle.
2. Request your donation pickup with your vehicle details
Call or submit our online form with your car’s year, make, model, VIN, and where it’s parked—whether that’s in Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Gainesville, or anywhere else in Florida. Let us know that the registration is expired and if the car doesn’t run, so we can send the right tow truck and plan the pickup smoothly.
3. Schedule free towing anywhere in Florida
We coordinate a free tow that fits your schedule—daytime, evening, or weekend. The car does not need to be drivable; it can be on flats, dead, or sitting in a condo garage. Our licensed towing partners meet you at the vehicle’s location, verify the VIN, and load it up at no cost to you, even with long-expired tags.
4. Sign over the Florida title at pickup
At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to Palm Motor Legacy according to Florida requirements. Our driver or a team member will guide you on where to sign and what to fill in. Once the title is signed correctly and we take the car, possession and responsibility transfer to us—notwithstanding the old, expired registration sticker.
5. Notify Florida DHSMV and keep your tax receipt
After pickup, file a notice of sale or transfer with the Florida DHSMV (online or at a tax collector’s office in your county) to remove future liability. Then keep the donation receipt and, if applicable, IRS Form 1098-C we provide. You may be able to claim a deduction of at least $500, subject to IRS rules and your tax situation.
Potential complications to watch for
Title missing or not in your name
Tip: Expired tags are fine, but we can’t complete a Florida donation without a proper title in the donor’s name. If the title is lost, damaged, or still in a previous owner’s name, contact your county tax collector or DHSMV office for a duplicate or title transfer before scheduling pickup.
Active lien shown on the Florida title
Tip: If your Florida title lists a lienholder, we may need proof the lien is satisfied before Palm Motor Legacy can accept the car. Check for any recorded lien on the front of the title and, if present, locate your lien release letter or contact the lender so the title can be cleared and transferred properly.
Vehicle stored in gated or tight locations
Tip: If your car with expired tags is in a condo garage, gated community, or tight backyard in places like Brickell, Boca Raton, or Clearwater Beach, let us know in advance. We’ll coordinate access instructions and the right truck so our towing partner can reach the vehicle safely without delays or extra trips.
Out-of-state title but vehicle in Florida
Tip: If the car is in Florida but still titled in another state, we can often still accept it, but the process is slightly different. Tell us which state the title is from so we can confirm the signature and transfer requirements and avoid any hiccups when our tow partner arrives for pickup.
