After pickup, either transfer the plate to another vehicle you own or surrender it through the DMV or county tax collector if you will not use it. Keep the surrender receipt; it is proof for canceling registration and may be needed before penalty-free insurance cancellation. Then file the notice of transfer / release of liability.

Confirm the state plate rule
The rule for this donation is: plates should come off the car before it leaves. State procedures can change, and offices may use different words for surrender, cancellation, or transfer. If anything about your registration is unusual, confirm the instruction with the DMV or county tax collector before the tow. Do this before you hand over the keys.
Remove plates before towing
Take off the rear plate, and the front plate if your vehicle has one, before the driver loads the car. Also remove any registration decal that is supposed to stay with you under your state instructions. Put the plates somewhere safe, not in the glove box or trunk. If someone else is present for pickup, tell that person not to let the plates leave with the car.
Transfer or surrender plates
If you are replacing the vehicle, ask the tax collector or DMV office whether you can transfer the plate to the next vehicle you own. If you are not transferring it, surrender the plate as directed by the office. Do not keep an unused active plate in a drawer and assume the registration is closed. The plate action is what helps close the record.
Keep your surrender receipt
When you surrender a plate, ask for and keep the receipt or confirmation. This is your proof that the registration can be cancelled or marked inactive. Insurance companies sometimes require that proof before they will cancel coverage without a penalty. Store the receipt with your donation paperwork, title documents, and any tow or pickup confirmation you receive from Palm Motor Legacy.
File the transfer notice

Do not use the plate surrender receipt as a substitute for the notice, and do not use the notice as a substitute for plate surrender or transfer. Keep copies of both.
Why plates are handled separately
License plates are not handled the same way everywhere. In most states, plates belong to the donor, so the donor removes them before sale, donation, or transfer, then surrenders or transfers them. In a minority of states, plates stay with the vehicle and move with the title. Common questions
What if the vehicle already left with the plates on it?
Contact the tow company or Palm Motor Legacy as soon as possible and ask whether the plates can be recovered. If they cannot be recovered, contact the DMV or county tax collector for the correct next step. Do not ignore it. An active plate can keep registration or insurance issues open.
Can I cancel insurance as soon as the car is picked up?
Check with your insurance company before canceling. Many insurers want proof that the registration is cancelled or that the plate has been surrendered. The surrender receipt is often the clean proof they need for penalty-free cancellation. Keep the receipt and any cancellation confirmation together.
Should I surrender plates if I plan to buy another car?
Not always. If you are buying another vehicle, ask the DMV or county tax collector whether the plate can be transferred to that vehicle. If you will not transfer it, surrender it instead. The key is to take an official action, not leave the plate active and unused.
